Federal regulations generated a standard for testing of five categories of drugs which includes marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine. Rohypnol, also known as flunitrazepam, or “Roofies” belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines and is a drug most hospitals do not generally test for nor have readily available if a patient claims of being drugged.
Ruffies last in the system for about 48 hours after ingestion and time is critical when needing to get drug tested. Often, victims are told they cannot be tested unless law enforcement is involved causing a resistance with seeking help from the criminal justice system as they are being forced to do something for an incident that may or may not have happened.
As the war on drugs continue to increase worldwide, men and women being drugged by Rohypnol has become a dilemma in the healthcare industry, universities, and the general public. While Rohypnol’s primary function is to facilitate sexual assault, there has been an increase of victims claiming to be drugged and have not been sexually assaulted.
